A clear direction and a systematic set of ideals:

A Coach, by definition, is a teacher. Teaching, at its’ ideal, is the art of awakening and discovering. The teacher must create an environment where it is safe to try, to learn, to lose, to risk, and to dream – an environment where failure is viewed as a valuable lesson. As a coach, you are responsible for the talent entrusted to you. You may face the greatest challenge of coaching; where potential may not be initially apparent, but it is there waiting to be discovered. It is often a disservice to players and to the game to focus only on today’s performance and today’s score. The greater challenge, and the responsibility of coaches, is to focus on player development.

Development calls for a plan – a consistent, articulated, patient plan that serves players and individuals of all abilities.

The desire to do things quickly and expediently, and with the focus on the final score or final outcome, limits a coach’s ability to truly develop players. We are always working for tomorrow, and that is a worthy aspiration and a conscious endeavor. This is a challenge and a responsibility, a responsibility to inspire ambition, to cultivate passion, to discover potential and to continually learn and to let learn. It is more than a game when you are coaching and teaching – it is an opportunity. There is an implied promise when one is called a coach. That promise and that challenge is to be a teacher to every player, and a constant student of the beautiful game.
